Making Your Home a Pet-Friendly Haven

February 16, 2024

Our pets bring joy and companionship to our lives, making our homes warmer and more vibrant. In light of that, we think providing a pet-friendly home is a gift you can give them in return. Let’s look at how to design living spaces that not only accommodate our furry friends but celebrate their presence.

Safety First: Pet-Proofing Your Home

Our homes may pose potential hazards to our pets, so we’re responsible to limit those hazards. Explore common dangers and learn how to pet-proof your living spaces effectively, in order to create a pet-friendly home.

Secure Hazardous Items

  • Keep household cleaners, chemicals, medications, and other potentially toxic substances out of your pet’s reach
  • Use childproof latches on cabinets where such items are stored, in order to keep your pet’s paws off
  • Use trash cans with secure lids to prevent pets from rummaging through them
  • Bundle and secure electrical cords to prevent chewing. Consider using cord protectors or deterrent sprays to discourage pets from nibbling on cords
  • Pick up small items that your pet could swallow, such as rubber bands, hair ties, and small toys

Gate Off Unsafe Areas

  • Use baby gates, allowing you to choose when to restrict access to certain rooms or areas of the house
  • Ensure that windows and balconies are secure to prevent pets from falling or escaping
  • Consider installing pet screens or window guards for added safety

Keep Food Secure

  • Be cautious with foods that are toxic to pets, such as chocolate, grapes, and onions
  • Store human and pet food in pet-proof containers to prevent your pet from accessing and potentially overindulging
  • Avoid leaving potentially harmful items, such as food wrappers or discarded bones, within easy reach

Choose Pet-Friendly Plants

  • Some plants can be toxic to pets, so choose pet-safe indoor plants. Research pet-friendly options and place them out of reach
  • Consider using hanging planters to prevent pets from digging in the soil

Provide Safe Toys & Pet-Friendly Outdoor Space

  • Offer a variety of safe and engaging toys to keep your pet mentally stimulated and less likely to chew on inappropriate items
  • If you have an outdoor area, make sure it is securely fenced, so your pet won’t be able to wandering off
  • Remove any toxic plants from the yard and ensure there are no accessible hazards

By implementing these pet-proofing measures, you’ll create a pet-friendly home that is more enjoyable living space for both you and your furry friends. Regularly assess your home for potential hazards and make adjustments as needed to accommodate your pet’s safety and well-being. See more pet safety tips from the Humane Society

Pet-Friendly Fabrics

Choosing the right furniture fabrics when you have pets is crucial to ensure durability, easy maintenance, and resistance to pet-related wear and tear. If you’re in the market, here are some recommended furniture fabrics for pet-friendly homes:

Microfiber

  • Pros: Resistant to stains and pet hair, durable, and easy to clean
  • Cons: May not be completely waterproof

Leather

  • Pros: Durable, resistant to pet scratches, easy to clean, and doesn’t trap pet hair
  • Cons: Susceptible to punctures from sharp claws, and may show scratches over time

Crypton

  • Pros: High-performance fabric designed to resist stains, moisture, and odors
  • Cons: Prompt cleaning is still recommended for spills.

Canvas

  • Pros: Sturdy, can withstand wear and tear, easy to clean, and resistant to pet hair
  • Cons: May not be as resistant to stains as some synthetic fabrics

Denim

  • Pros: Durable, rugged, and easy to clean
  • Cons: May not be as stain-resistant as some synthetic options

Outdoor Fabrics

  • Pros: Water-resistant, durable, and easy to clean.
  • Cons: Limited color and pattern options compared to some indoor fabrics

Tight Weaves

  • Pros: Fabrics with tight weaves can help prevent pet claws from snagging
  • Cons: Some tight weaves may be less comfortable for lounging compared to softer fabrics

Velvet

  • Pros: Dense and soft, surprisingly resistant to pet hair, and has a luxurious feel
  • Cons: May be more prone to stains, and regular vacuuming is recommended

Remember, no fabric is entirely immune to the wear and tear that pets can bring, so maintenance is key. Regular cleaning, proper grooming of pets, and using furniture covers or blankets can also help protect your furniture and keep it looking great for longer.

The Harmony of Pet and Home Décor

Having a pet-friendly home doesn’t mean you can’t have style! Integrating pet items with home decor allows you to create a harmonious living space that accommodates both your personal style and your furry friend’s needs. Here are some tips on seamlessly blending pet items into your home decor:

Choose Stylish Pet-Friendly Furniture

Opt for pet beds and furniture that complement your home’s aesthetic. Consider designs that mimic your existing furniture or use neutral colors that blend well with your decor.

Coordinate Colors

Choose pet accessories, such as bowls, blankets, and toys, in colors that complement your home decor. This helps create a cohesive look throughout the space.

Hide the Litter Box

If you have a cat, consider investing in a stylish litter box enclosure or cabinet that doubles as furniture. This helps camouflage the litter box and seamlessly integrates it into your home.

Use Decorative Pet Bowls

Look for decorative pet bowls that match your kitchen or dining room decor. There are various stylish options in ceramic, stainless steel, or elevated designs that can enhance the overall look.

Incorporate Pet-Friendly Fabrics

Choose furniture fabrics that are both stylish and pet-friendly. Look for materials resistant to stains, pet hair, and easy to clean. This ensures that your furniture stays in good condition despite your pet’s activities.

Create a Pet Corner

Designate a specific corner or area for your pet’s belongings, such as beds, toys, and bowls. This helps keep pet items organized and visually separates them from the rest of the living space.

Use Storage Solutions

Invest in stylish storage solutions to keep pet toys, grooming supplies, and other items out of sight when not in use. This could include baskets, decorative boxes, or built-in storage furniture.

Frame Pet Photos

Incorporate framed photos of your pets into your gallery wall or place them on shelves. This adds a personal touch to your decor while celebrating your furry companions.

Choose Pet-Friendly Rugs

Select rugs that are easy to clean and resistant to pet stains. Consider patterns or colors that can help camouflage any fur or dirt brought in by your pets. Check out our additional tips on choosing a rug

Add Pet-Friendly Decor

Look for decorative items explicitly designed for pet owners, such as paw-print throw pillows, pet-themed artwork, or sculptures. These small touches can celebrate your love for pets without sacrificing style.

Grooming Station Integration

If you have a designated grooming station for your pet, make it visually appealing by using stylish storage containers for grooming tools and incorporating it into your overall decor scheme.

By blending pet items with your home decor thoughtfully, you can create a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable for your furry friends. The key is to make intentional choices that reflect your style while considering the practical needs of your pets.

Your Pet’s Home

Creating a pet-friendly home is not just about meeting the needs of your furry companions; it’s about enhancing the overall quality of life for both pets and their owners. By combining safety, practicality, and design, you can transform your home into a space that not only reflects your style but also celebrates the unique bond between you and your pets.

Most buyers look at the staging. I look at the stuff that costs you money. 🔍

In our specific Portland market, these are the "Big 6" I’m hunting for during every single walkthrough:

1️⃣ The Oil Tank Mystery: I’m looking for fill pipes in the yard. An abandoned underground tank is a massive liability. Soil remediation can quickly turn into a $2,000–$20,000 nightmare.

2️⃣ The "Mossy" Roof: PNW moisture is brutal. If I see curling shingles or heavy moss, we’re at the end of its life. A replacement in our area averages $12,000–$25,000.

3️⃣ Electrical Red Flags: I always check the panel for Zinsco, Federal Pacific, or Knob & Tube. These are often uninsurable in Oregon. Budget $3,000–$5,000 for a modern upgrade.

4️⃣ Radon—The Invisible Guest: Portland is a high-radon zone. If there isn`t a mitigation system already, we are definitely testing. A new system install is roughly $1,500–$2,500.

5️⃣ Blown Window Seals: If the glass looks foggy or streaky inside, the seal is gone. In our historic homes, custom window replacements can easily run $1,000+ per window.

6️⃣ The Sewer Scope: Never skip this. Our old clay pipes and massive tree roots are a bad mix. A $250 scope now saves you from a $15,000 excavation later.

The "pretty stuff" is easy to fix. The "bones" are where we negotiate. 🛠️

Buying a home is such a whirlwind that it’s easy to miss the small details while you’re falling in love with the perfect backyard or that open-concept floor plan. But as a broker, I’ve seen the “honeymoon phase” end quickly once the reality of living in the house actually sets in.

I want you to love your home long after I hand over the keys, so I’m pulling back the curtain on the things that usually get overlooked. These are some things that make people hate their house after closing:

Low Water Pressure: A daily mood-killer that often hints at old pipes which are a real pain and expense to replace.

Lack of Outlets: You don’t realize how much you rely on power until you’re running extension cords across your home office.

Inadequate Lighting: Dim rooms feel gloomy, and adding recessed lights later means messy drywall work and extra electrician fees.

Tiny Closets: We all think we can declutter, but cramped closets usually end with clothes on the floor and a need for a renovation.

Squeaky Floorboards: They seem charming during a walkthrough but are a nightmare when you’re sneaking to the kitchen at night.

Awkward Cabinetry: If your plates don’t fit in the cabinets or the microwave is too high to reach, every meal becomes a chore.

Limited Guest Parking: It’s a huge hassle to realize after moving in that your friends have nowhere to park, or that the street rules make hosting a total headache.

This is exactly why I tell my clients to look at the “boring” stuff during the inspection. You’re buying a lifestyle, not just a floor plan!

What’s one thing you noticed after moving in that drove you crazy? Let me know in the comments!

You can renovate a kitchen, but you can’t manufacture this. 🏔️💧

A view isn`t just a perk, it’s a premium. Whether it’s $25k or $2M in added value, the rarity of a location is what truly defines a luxury property.

I always tell my clients: Buy the view, then build the dream.

Did you know your brain is actually hardwired to look for what’s going wrong? 🛑

It’s an old survival instinct designed to protect us from danger, but in today’s world, it often just keeps us stuck in a loop of stress and “what-ifs.” If you’re only looking for threats, that’s all you’ll find.

At Robbins Realty Group, we believe that the best results come from a shift in perspective. 🏠 That’s why I start every single morning with one simple question:

“How is this going to be the best day of my life?”

By asking this, I’m training my brain to scan for opportunities, solutions, and wins—no matter how small. When you change what you’re looking for, you change what you find.

Give it a try tomorrow morning and let me know: What’s one thing you’re looking forward to today? 👇
