DIY vs Contractor: When is it worth hiring a pro?

February 13, 2024

Do-It-Yourself home improvement can be a fun but intimidating–there is certainly a spectrum, from DIY triumphs to regrettable mishaps. We’re digging deeper into the decision-making–when is it prudent to invest in a professional touch and when homeowners can confidently take the reins.

Safety Beyond All

When it comes to tasks involving electrical, plumbing, or structural changes, it’s not just a suggestion but a non-negotiable rule – enlist the expertise of a licensed professional. Prioritize safety not only for yourself but also to ensure your abode remains compliant with stringent codes and regulations. The peace of mind that comes with professional craftsmanship in these critical areas is priceless.

The Financial Landscape

Picture this: You embark on a DIY endeavor to save money, only to find yourself spending more than if you had hired a professional from the start. To avoid this financial rollercoaster, meticulous research is your ally. Consider the investment in tools and materials – if it’s a substantial amount, the scales might tip in favor of a seasoned pro who already possesses the necessary equipment and expertise.

Skillful Considerations

DIY enthusiasts revel in the satisfaction of transforming their living spaces, but an honest self-assessment of your skills is paramount. While cosmetic changes might seem enticingly straightforward, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer in the DIY realm. Gauge your comfort level, project scope, and budget to determine whether you’re equipped to handle the task at hand or if it’s time to enlist professional aid.

Project Management Beyond DIY

The decision to DIY or bring in a professional extends beyond the actual execution of tasks. Effective project management is a crucial aspect that often gets overlooked. Consider your ability to plan, organize, and execute the project seamlessly. Professionals bring not only technical expertise but also project management skills, ensuring a smoother process from start to finish.

The Evolving DIY Landscape

The decision of DIY vs professional help doesn’t have to be all or nothing–consider a combination of personal initiative and professional guidance. DIY can be a collaborative effor. Begin your project with a consult, then roll up your sleeves with the assurance that professional help is just a call away. This relationship can be a game-changer, allowing you to save money while maintaining a safety net for those moments when reinforcements are necessary.

The Verdict

The DIY vs. professional dilemma is a tricky decision influenced by safety, budget constraints, individual skills, and project management capabilities. When contemplating your next home improvement venture, remember that informed choices, coupled with a sprinkle of DIY enthusiasm, form the foundation of your journey toward creating a better home. May your projects be rewarding, your endeavors safe, and your living space a reflection of both craftsmanship and a personal touch!

The clock is ticking, and we don’t have time for major renovations. To get top dollar in a month, we need to focus purely on high-impact, visual wins that make buyers fall in love the second they pull up to the curb.

Here is my exact 30-day battle plan:

Days 1-10: The Great Purge & Pack
Box up what you love and donate the rest. We want your closets looking spacious, not packed to the brim. Buyers need to see themselves living here, so let’s get the personal clutter out of the way first.

Days 11-15: Power-Wash & Fresh Bark
Around West Linn and Lake Oswego, nature loves to try and reclaim our houses. Power-wash the moss off the driveway, clean the gutters, and throw down fresh dark bark mulch. Curb appeal is everything.

Days 16-20: Paint & Lighting “Facelift”
Touch up the trim and paint over any highly personal wall colors with a warm, inviting neutral. Then, swap out outdated light fixtures and replace bulbs with bright, warm-white LEDs to maximize that Pacific Northwest light.

Days 21-25: Deep Clean
Hire professionals for this. I’m talking baseboards, inside the oven, and sparkling windows. When a house looks and smells pristine, buyers instantly feel confident that the home has been meticulously maintained.

Days 26-30: Style & Stage
Clear the kitchen counters completely to show off the space. Add some fresh, simple greenery and style your outdoor patio or deck to look like the ultimate, peaceful spot to relax at the end of the day.

Three weeks of hustle, one week of final prep, and then we hit the market with gorgeous professional photos.

75 days of breaking old habits, shattering comfort zones, and dialing in our businesses. 💥

I couldn`t be prouder to sit down for a celebratory breakfast with these phenomenal agents. This stretch pushed us all to prospect more efficiently and elevate how we show up for our clients every single day.

We definitely missed those who couldn`t make it to breakfast, but the energy of this entire team is unmatched right now.

If this is what 75 days of focused growth looks like, I can`t wait to see what the rest of the year brings. Let’s get it! 💪

10 years. One incredible journey. 💚

Looking back to when Mom and I first started RRG, it feels like a lifetime ago, and in many ways, it was! Back then, my house was loud and chaotic with four kids at home. Today, I’m navigating the “empty nester” life and soaking up every second with my two granddaughters. 💖

We definitely navigated our fair share of the “messy middle” that comes with building a business from the ground up, but I can finally say we’ve hit our stride. Mom is enjoying her well-deserved retirement, and I am standing here today so incredibly proud of the reputation and community RRG has built.

To the wonderful clients and colleagues who have become friends over the last decade: thank you for trusting me. I’m so proud of how far we’ve come, and I can’t wait to see what the next ten years have in store!

We are officially in a steady market! ⚖️

Whether you’re looking to buy or sell, the West Linn and Lake Oswego areas are showing a beautiful balance. Right now, it’s all about the strategy.

For my sellers: The “Sweet Spot” is real. If we price it right, it moves. If we push too high, it sits. It’s that simple. 💥

For my buyers: Now is a great time to buy! Summer is going to bring even more inventory, so let’s get you ready to find exactly what you’re looking for as more options hit the market. ☀️

Thinking of making a move this summer? I’d love to help you find your sweet spot.
