There is a special kind of magic in a “hidden gem.” It’s that feeling of discovery when you realize a place you’ve driven past a hundred times actually has a secret history or a view that takes your breath away.
In West Linn, we are surrounded by these spots. While we all love our frequent stops at Willamette Park or our favorite coffee shops along the highway, there is so much more tucked away in our hills and along our riverbanks. We’ve put together a local scavenger hunt to help you rediscover the town we call home. Pack some snacks, grab your walking shoes, and see if you can find these five hidden treasures.
Stop 1: The “Vertical Street” and the Arch Bridge View
The Clue: Seek out a historic building that once housed a post office, a grocer, and city offices all at once. Nearby, you’ll find a “street” that goes up, not out.
The Gem: Start at the Historic West Linn City Hall (near the bridge). Across the bridge in Oregon City, you’ll see a unique “vertical street” a 130-foot-tall public elevator that connects the lower downtown area of Oregon City with the upper residential area. This spot offers one of the most iconic, uncrowded views of the Oregon City-West Linn Arch Bridge. It’s a great place for a photo op that feels like a postcard from 1922.
Stop 2: The Camassia Natural Area
The Clue: Find the place where the ice age floods left their mark. Look for the rocky plateau where rare wildflowers bloom in the spring.
The Gem: Camassia Natural Area is a 22-acre wilderness tucked right into a residential neighborhood. Managed by the Nature Conservancy, it features boardwalks and trails through unique rock formations created by the Missoula Floods. If you’re here as a family, it’s a great spot for birdwatching; if you’re here on a date, the quiet, mossy scenery feels worlds away from the suburbs.
Stop 3: The Ghost of the Willamette Falls Locks
The Clue: Head toward the water to find a piece of engineering that changed the Willamette River forever. It’s a National Historic Landmark that now sits in a peaceful, quiet slumber.
The Gem: The Willamette Falls Locks are a marvel of 19th-century grit. While they are currently closed to river traffic, the area around them is rich with history. You can peer through the gates and see the massive stone chambers that once lifted steamboats past the falls. It’s a hauntingly beautiful reminder of West Linn’s industrial roots.
Stop 4: The Maddax Boat Rails and the Great Blue Heron View
The Clue: Find the forest that was once a private boat-building yard. Look for the “tracks” in the mud that lead straight into the river.
The Gem: Maddax Woods was the home and workshop of Virgil Maddax, a legendary local boat builder. Instead of a boat, the “gem” here is the set of original iron launch rails still embedded in the ground. Virgil used these to slide his massive 40- to 60-foot wooden seafaring vessels into the Willamette. If you follow the rails to the water’s edge, you’ll find a viewing platform. Look across to Goat Island—it’s home to one of the largest Great Blue Heron rookeries in the region. In the spring, you can see dozens of massive nests at the very tops of the trees.
Stop 5: The Secret Garden of the McLean House
The Clue: Find the “grand dame” of West Linn’s historic homes. It’s a 1927 estate tucked behind a wall of greenery that feels like a private park in the middle of the city.
The Gem: The McLean House and Community Center (located at 5350 River Street). While many people drive past the entrance on their way to Willamette Park, few realize this historic house and its sprawling 2-acre “secret garden” are open to the public when events aren’t scheduled. It was built by Dr. Edward McLean and served as a focal point for West Linn social life for decades. Today, you can wander the wooded paths, find the hidden stone benches, and admire the classic architecture. It’s the ultimate “peaceful” finish to your hunt.
Making it a Day
Whether you complete this hunt in one afternoon or spread it out over a few weekends, we hope it gives you a fresh perspective on the community we love. West Linn is more than just a place to live; it’s a collection of stories, landscapes, and hidden corners waiting to be explored.
Taking the time to step off the main road and see these spots for yourself is a great way to feel more rooted in the area. So, grab a friend, your partner, or the kids, and head out to see what makes West Linn truly special. Happy hunting!
